  • Research News- The Ohio State University Article: "CHEMICALS IN BROWN ALGAE MAY PROTECT AGAINST SKIN CANCER" - January 15 2007

“These compounds seemed to be dramatically effective at fairly low doses both orally and topically,” says principal investigator Gary D. Stoner, professor emeritus of internal medicine and a cancer chemoprevention researcher.

'These findings suggest that, even when eaten, these compounds get to skin cells and neutralize the cancer-causing oxygen radicals that are produced by UV exposure.'”

  • NBC-WMAQ-TV-Chicago Article "Brown Algae Is Possible Skin Cancer Fighter, Study Says" - March 29 2007

"An animal study indicates that chemicals called brown algae polyphenols, which are found in a type of brown marine seaweed, might protect against skin cancers caused by ultraviolet B radiation.

UVB radiation in sunlight is thought to be responsible for 90 percent of the estimated 1.3 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer diagnosed in the United States annually.

Researchers applied the BAPs to the skin of hairless mice and fed it to the animals. In both cases, the substances reduced the number of skin tumors by up to 60 percent and their size by up to 43 percent. They also reduced inflammation."

"Polyphenols use the rings to capture stray electrons from free radicals. So the more rings a polyphenol has, the better it works. Most flavonoids have three interconnected rings. Catechins from green tea have four. But tthe ring structure of all these pales in comparison to this newly discovered polyphenol called Seanol. And it has up to eight interconnected rings. That makes the Seanol molecule a veritable electron (i.e., free radical) trapping machine! These molecules beat the free-radical scavenging ability of most polyphenols by 10-100 times. That means they far outshine eeven the extremely powerful green tea catechins." - Dr. Robert Jay Rowen

"...Seanol compounds inhibit DGAT by more than 50%. Dr. Haengwoo used Seanol to control DGAT in laboratory mice. His research shows that Seanol reduced their body fat and increased their phyiscal activity. But most importantly, it encouraged leanness in the animals and resistance to a high-fat diet. Obese mice lost more than 10% of their weight in just 120 days! They had shiny skin and were more alert, and no dside effects." - Dr. Robert Jay Rowen

    "BROWN SEAWEED

Mice that were fed antioxidants from brown seaweed developed 56 percent fewer skin tumors than untreated mice after repeated exposure to UVB light. ' Eating a meal of sushi or taking the supplement Seanol could provide similar protection in humans, particularly if you also use sunscreen,' speculates Gary D. Stoner, professor of internal medicine at Ohio State University, who published the study in the International Journal of Cancer last December. 'This is one of the strongest inhibitors of UV-induced skin cancer that I've seen.'" - Kristin Cobb
